Why Construction Services Matter in Tropical Landscaping

In regions like Guanacaste, landscaping isn’t just about planting and design – it starts from the ground up. Soil composition, drainage, slope stability, and water access all play a critical role in determining whether your landscape will flourish or fail. This is where construction services become essential.

From lot clearing in Costa Rica to complex hillside transformations, having the right infrastructure in place ensures that your investment lasts. Without proper grading, drainage, and structural support, even the most beautiful landscape design can quickly deteriorate under the pressure of the elements.

And that’s exactly why Vida Verde has expanded its services – to offer clients a seamless, start-to-finish solution.

Excavation & Backhoe Services: Building the Foundation

Every successful outdoor project begins with proper land preparation.

Vida Verde’s excavation and backhoe services are designed to reshape land with intention. Whether it’s leveling uneven terrain, preparing building pads, or creating terraces on sloped properties, these services form the backbone of any functional outdoor space.

In Guanacaste, where terrain can vary dramatically and the dry season leaves behind layers of dust and compacted soil, professional excavation is critical. It not only prepares the land for planting and construction but also ensures proper drainage and erosion control when the rains return.

For clients investing in lot clearing in Costa Rica, this step is especially valuable. Clearing land responsibly, without stripping it of its natural potential, allows for a thoughtful redesign that integrates both structure and ecosystem.

Retention Walls: Strength Meets Design

Retention walls in Costa Rica are more than just structural features – they are essential for managing water flow and preventing erosion in tropical climates.

Vida Verde specializes in building retention walls that blend into the natural landscape while providing critical support for sloped properties. These walls help create usable space, define garden areas, and protect your land during the intense rainy season.

When combined with proper drainage systems, retention walls become a powerful tool for long-term landscape health – one of the key benefits of landscape design in tropical climates.

Fencing Installation: Privacy, Protection, and Definition

A well-designed fence does more than mark a boundary – it enhances privacy, security, and the overall flow of your property.

Vida Verde offers fencing solutions tailored to each client’s needs, whether it’s creating a safe space for pets, defining garden zones, or adding a layer of privacy with natural integration like living fences or palm screens.

In tropical settings, fencing can also be part of the design itself, working in harmony with plants and natural materials to create a cohesive look.

Water Tank Installation & Irrigation Systems in Costa Rica

Water management is one of the most important aspects of landscaping in Costa Rica.

With long dry seasons followed by intense rainfall, having a reliable water system is essential. Vida Verde installs water tanks, pressurization systems, and irrigation networks designed to keep your landscape thriving year-round.

From small residential setups to large-scale irrigation zones, these systems are customized to maximize efficiency and sustainability – another major benefit of landscape design in tropical climates.

Outdoor Patios & Ranchos: Creating Functional Living Spaces

Outdoor living is at the heart of life in Costa Rica, and Vida Verde now offers the design and construction of custom patios and ranchos to help clients fully embrace their space.

Patios provide a solid, stylish foundation for entertaining, dining, or simply relaxing outdoors. Built with materials suited to tropical climates, these spaces are designed to handle heat, moisture, and heavy rains while maintaining their beauty over time.

Ranchos are traditional open-air covered structures that add both charm and practicality. Whether used as a shaded lounge, outdoor kitchen, yoga space, or gathering area, a rancho creates a natural extension of your home into the landscape.

When combined with thoughtful landscaping, patios and ranchos become more than features – they become lifestyle spaces that connect you to the outdoors while offering comfort and protection from the elements.

Featured Project: A Full Property Transformation in Playas del Coco

One of Vida Verde’s most exciting current projects is a complete property redesign in Playas del Coco – a five-week transformation that showcases the full scope of the company’s new construction services.

Co-owner Kathryn Gordon describes the project as “an all-in-one project.”

“We really are a one-stop shop. We think through everything and provide the work.”

The transformation began with addressing immediate irrigation issues – a crucial first step in ensuring the long-term success of the landscape. From there, the team evaluated existing vegetation, determining which plants and palm trees could be revived and which needed replacement.

“We’re re-transplanting to create privacy between the house next door,” Kathryn explains, highlighting the thoughtful approach to both design and functionality.

The project then moved into heavy construction, with a backhoe on-site for nearly two weeks.

“The backhoe is there for 12 days – building out the pads correctly, creating terraces, preparing for the rainy season,” she says.

Terracing is a key element of the redesign, allowing the property to manage water flow effectively while creating distinct, usable spaces. Drainage systems are being installed at the base of each slope to further protect the land during heavy rains.

From there, the project expands into water infrastructure:

“We’re putting in a 5000-liter water tank with all the hydraulic system and the pressurization… and connecting the irrigation system into three different zones.”

This level of detail ensures that every part of the property receives the right amount of water – no more, no less.

But the transformation doesn’t stop at functionality.

The backyard is being reimagined as a serene orchard-style garden, complete with Mesino lime trees, bananas, papayas, coconut palms, and avocado trees.

There is also a vegetable and herb garden in the works, with an emphasis on water consciousness.

“For example, we didn’t plant pineapple, which needs to be watered three times a day!”

They also plan to plant lemongrass and lavender to repel mosquitoes.

“It’s like a relaxing, but functional, garden in the backyard,” Kathryn shares.

Meanwhile, the front yard will feature fresh soil, new grass, and nearly all new plants – a complete refresh designed to enhance curb appeal and usability.

The Bigger Picture: Sustainable, Functional Beauty

What sets Vida Verde apart is not just the range of services – it’s the philosophy behind them.

Every project is approached as an ecosystem, where construction, design, and nature work together. This holistic approach is what makes the difference between a landscape that simply looks good and one that truly thrives.

From lot clearing projects to full-scale redesigns like the one in Playas del Coco, Vida Verde is helping clients reimagine what’s possible for their land.

And as more homeowners and property investors recognize the benefits of landscape design in tropical climates, the demand for integrated services continues to grow.

Tropical Elegance in Guanacaste – Designing with Palms, Purpose, and Tradition

There’s something timeless about palm trees. They instantly evoke that relaxed, coastal lifestyle that makes Guanacaste feel like home. Whether you’re steps from the beach or tucked into the hills, palms are one of the most powerful and practical ways to elevate your landscape.

At Vida Verde Landscaping, palms are a core part of our plant catalogue because they don’t just look beautiful – they thrive in Guanacaste’s unique climate when selected and placed correctly. From bold statement trees to soft, layered backdrops, palms bring movement, shade, and structure to any outdoor space.

In this guide, we’re sharing the types of palms we offer, how they grow best in Guanacaste, how to design with them (including our signature grouping technique), and how they connect to this meaningful time of year in Costa Rica.

Why Palms Thrive in Guanacaste

Guanacaste’s dry tropical forest climate is defined by long sunny dry seasons and intense but short rainy seasons. This means landscaping here requires plants that can handle extreme heat, wind, and periods of minimal water.

Many palm species are naturally adapted to these conditions. In fact, certain varieties like Bismarck and foxtail palms are known for their drought resistance and ability to thrive in the region with minimal maintenance.

This makes palms an ideal choice for:

  • Low-maintenance landscapes
  • Rental and investment properties
  • Coastal and hillside homes
  • Sustainable, water-conscious design

When chosen properly, palms don’t just survive here – they define the landscape.

The Palms in Our Vida Verde Catalogue

While each project is customized, the palms we offer generally fall into a few key design categories:

  1. Statement Palms

These are your “wow factor” trees – tall, sculptural, and impossible to ignore.

Think:

  • Bottle palms
  • Bismarck palms
  • Foxtail palm

These work best as focal points:

  • Framing an entryway
  • Anchoring a pool area
  • Highlighting ocean views

Because of their height and structure, they create instant luxury and vertical interest.

  1. Clustering & Screening Palms

Multiple palms (palmeras multiples) growing tightly together are perfect for privacy and layering.

Common choices include:

  • Areca palms
  • Fenix palms
  • Lipstick palms

They’re ideal for:

  • Dust control
  • Privacy screens
  • Softening fences and walls

In Guanacaste, where dust and wind can be a factor during dry season, these clusters also act as natural filters – improving both comfort and aesthetics.

  1. Accent & Mid-Level Palms

These are smaller palms that fill in the gaps and add depth.

Examples:

  • Pygmy date palms
  • Cigar palms
  • Chinese fan palms

They work beautifully:

  • Around patios and walkways
  • Near outdoor seating areas
  • As transitions between larger trees and ground cover

These palms help create that layered, resort-style look that feels both intentional and effortless.

Check out our Plant Catalogue to see some of the palms we offer.

Where Palms Grow Best in Guanacaste

Placement is everything when it comes to palms in Guanacaste.

Full Sun vs Partial Shade

Most palms love full sun – especially:

  • Coconut palms
  • Bismarck palms
  • Royal palms

However, smaller understory palms (like bamboo palms) can thrive in partial shade, making them perfect near homes or under larger trees.

Soil & Drainage

Palms prefer:

  • Well-draining soil
  • Slightly sandy or loamy conditions

This aligns perfectly with much of Guanacaste’s natural terrain.

Wind Considerations

Coastal areas and hilltops experience strong seasonal winds. Taller palms with flexible trunks (like coconut palms) handle wind well, while clustering palms can act as windbreaks.

Watering Needs

While many palms are drought-tolerant once established, they do need:

  • Regular watering during the first year
  • Extra support during peak dry season

After that, they become one of the most resilient elements in your landscape.

Designing with Palms – The Power of Three

One of our favorite design techniques at Vida Verde is grouping plants in threes – something we touched on in a previous blog and continue to use in nearly every project.

Why three? Because it creates balance without looking too symmetrical. It feels natural, organic, and visually complete.

How to Use Palm Groupings

Instead of planting a single palm, try:

  • 3 palms of varying heights
  • 3 of the same species staggered naturally
  • 1 statement palm + 2 smaller accents

This works beautifully for:

  • Entryways
  • Garden focal points
  • Poolside landscaping
  • Corners of large properties

The result is a layered, professional look that feels like it belongs in a high-end resort.

Pairing Palms with Other Elements

To take it even further, combine your palm groupings with:

  • Ground covers like lantana or zebra grass
  • Decorative gravel or stone
  • Uplighting for nighttime ambiance

This creates depth, texture, and a landscape that evolves throughout the day.

Palms and the Spirit of Costa Rica

Palms are more than just landscaping in Costa Rica – they’re part of the country’s identity.

With over 100 palm species found throughout the country, they are woven into both the natural environment and cultural symbolism.

And there’s no better time to reflect on that than during Semana Santa.

Palm Sunday and Semana Santa in Costa Rica

On March 29, 2026, Costa Rica will celebrate Palm Sunday, known locally as Domingo de Ramos. This marks the beginning of Semana Santa (Holy Week), one of the most important cultural and religious times of the year.

Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus’ arrival into Jerusalem, where palm branches were laid in his path. In Costa Rica, this is honored through church services and processions where palm leaves are blessed and carried by the community.

Throughout Semana Santa, you’ll notice:

  • Religious processions and reenactments
  • Families gathering and traveling (especially to Guanacaste beaches)
  • A slower pace of life, with many businesses closed late in the week
  • A deep sense of tradition and community

In Guanacaste, the contrast is especially unique – peaceful beach towns transform into vibrant hubs of activity as locals travel to the coast to celebrate and relax.

Property Care in Costa Rica

Designing a landscape in Guanacaste is about more than choosing plants – it’s about creating a space that works with the land, the climate, and the lifestyle.

Palms offer:

  • Beauty that feels effortlessly tropical
  • Durability in a dry, coastal climate
  • Versatility in both modern and natural designs
  • A connection to the cultural heartbeat of Costa Rica

At Vida Verde Landscaping, we don’t just plant palms – we design environments that feel intentional, grounded, and alive.

Whether you’re building from scratch, refreshing your garden, or creating privacy and shade, palms are one of the most impactful investments you can make. And when placed thoughtfully – especially in groups of three – they don’t just fill a space…they transform it.

Vida Verde – From Humble Roots to Serving Guanacaste with Purpose and Passion

When we look back on our first six months in business, one word comes to mind: gratitude.

What began as a shared vision between husband and wife team Lieber (aka Pito) and Kathryn has quickly grown into a trusted name for property care Costa Rica. Serving Tamarindo, Playas del Coco, and the surrounding communities of coastal Guanacaste, Vida Verde Landscaping and Property Maintenance was built on family values, hard work, and a deep respect for both people and the land.

Today, with 19 five-star Google reviews and counting, we are humbled by the trust our clients have placed in us as we embarked on this journey.

From Humble Roots to a Growing Team

Like many small businesses in Costa Rica, Vida Verde started small. It began with a sturdy vehicle, a few essential tools, and an unwavering commitment to doing the job right. What we may have lacked in size, we made up for in dedication, integrity, and pride in our work.

More than six months later, that small operation has grown into a professional, expanding team serving residential and commercial properties throughout Guanacaste. From private homeowners and realtors to builders, investors, and large development projects, we are proud to support the region’s growth while protecting its natural beauty.

But our story did not begin six months ago. It began many years earlier, shaped by our individual paths and shared values.

Pito’s Story – From Guápiles to Guanacaste

Yornan Leiber Durán Hernández – known to most as Pito – brings a story of resilience, humility, and hard-earned success.

Originally from Guápiles, Costa Rica, Pito is one of ten siblings and a farmer by trade. He grew up wearing his work boots to school and carrying his books in a rice bag. Hard work was not a choice – it was a way of life.

His deep connection to the land began in childhood and evolved into expertise in landscaping, property maintenance, irrigation systems, and large-scale land management. Today, Pito runs Vida Verde Landscaping and Property Maintenance with the same grit and integrity that shaped his upbringing.

His journey from rural farmland to leading a successful company in Guanacaste is not just inspiring – it defines the heart of Vida Verde.

Kathryn’s Vision – Growing Businesses in Costa Rica

Over a decade ago, Kathryn moved to Costa Rica and quickly fell in love with its culture, community, and entrepreneurial spirit. However, she also recognized a challenge: many small, family-run businesses were struggling to evolve in an increasingly digital economy.

That realization led her to found Costa Consultants International, a consultancy dedicated to helping local ventures thrive. What started as a mission to bridge traditional businesses with modern digital strategies has grown into a complete team supporting industries such as real estate, tourism, wellness, and professional services.

Through her work, Kathryn witnessed firsthand the importance of strong branding, strategic growth, and community-centered leadership. Those lessons became foundational when launching Vida Verde – ensuring that from day one, the company would operate with structure, professionalism, and a clear long-term vision.

A Triple Bottom Line Philosophy – People, Planet, Profit

From the beginning, we committed to a triple bottom line philosophy: people, planet, and profit.

People – We treat our clients and employees like family. That means clear communication, fair pricing, respect for time, and delivering work we are proud to stand behind.

Planet – Living and working in Guanacaste means understanding tropical ecosystems. We design and maintain landscapes that are sustainable, water-conscious, and suited to Costa Rica’s climate. We also collaborate with the ICE Forestry Program to support reforestation efforts and environmental responsibility.

Profit – A healthy business sustains jobs, supports families, and strengthens the local economy. Responsible growth allows us to invest in better equipment, skilled team members, and community initiatives.

Beyond business, we donate our time and materials to improve local schools and parks. Because success means little if it does not give back.

Our Services – Comprehensive Property Care in Costa Rica

Vida Verde was built to provide reliable, professional property care Costa Rica for both residential and commercial clients. Whether maintaining a vacation home, preparing a development lot, or upgrading outdoor spaces, our services include:

  • Commercial and residential landscaping and maintenance
  • Garden design and installation
  • Irrigation installation and repair
  • Garden lighting installation
  • Lot leveling
  • Lot clearing
  • Natural fencing
  • Retention walls
  • Wooden patio restoration
  • A/C cleaning
  • Fumigation
  • Power washing
  • Gutter cleaning

We understand that property ownership in Guanacaste comes with unique challenges. The tropical climate is beautiful, but it is demanding. Fast-growing vegetation, heavy rains, dry seasons, pests, and salt air all require consistent, knowledgeable care.

Pito and Kathryn are passionate about helping their clients understand how to maintain their garden in Costa Rica. It all begins with understanding the rhythms of the seasons. Proper irrigation systems are essential during the dry months. Native plant selection reduces water consumption. Regular pruning prevents overgrowth and protects structures. Preventative maintenance – such as gutter cleaning and power washing – preserves property value.

Our role is not just to provide services, but to guide clients in protecting their investment long-term.

Serving Tamarindo, Playas del Coco, and Beyond

Guanacaste continues to grow rapidly, particularly in communities like Tamarindo, Avellanas, Brasilito, Huacas, Flamingo, Potrero, Playa Grande, and Playas del Coco. With that growth comes increased demand for professional landscaping, irrigation systems, and reliable maintenance.

We are proud to serve homeowners, property managers, realtors, and developers across these regions and surrounding areas. Each project – large or small – receives the same level of care and attention.

From boutique commercial properties to private residences tucked into lush hillsides, our mission remains the same: elevate outdoor spaces while preserving the natural beauty that makes Guanacaste so special.

19 Five-Star Reviews – A Reflection of Trust

Receiving 19 five-star reviews on Google in our first several months is more than a milestone – it is a reflection of trust.

Each review represents a homeowner who entrusted us with their property, a builder who relied on our team to meet deadlines, or a business owner who counted on us to maintain a professional exterior.

In an industry where reliability and communication can make all the difference, we are proud that our clients consistently mention professionalism, responsiveness, and quality workmanship.

To every client who has supported us so far – thank you. Your confidence fuels our growth and motivates us to keep raising the standard.

Looking Ahead – Growing with Purpose

While the first six months have exceeded our expectations, we see this as only the beginning.

Our vision for Vida Verde is long-term. We plan to continue expanding our team, investing in equipment, deepening community involvement, and strengthening environmental partnerships. Growth will always be guided by our values – never rushed, never at the expense of quality.

Together, Kathryn’s strategic business leadership and Pito’s hands-on expertise create a balance that defines Vida Verde. One rooted in structure and heart. Strategy and soil. Vision and action.

As we move forward, our promise remains simple:

  • To deliver dependable property care Costa Rica rooted in integrity.
  • To educate homeowners on how to maintain your garden in Costa Rica with confidence.
  • To serve Tamarindo, Playas del Coco, and surrounding communities with professionalism and pride.
  • To treat our team and clients like family.
  • To protect the land that sustains us all.

From the bottom of our hearts – thank you for being part of our journey.

Here’s to the next chapter of Vida Verde in Guanacaste.

The Rule of Three in Landscape Design – Creating Focal Points in Guanacaste Gardens

In tropical landscape design in Costa Rica, the look of natural lushness does not come from planting everything everywhere. It comes from intentional grouping, balance, and repetition. One of the most effective design principles we use at Vida Verde is the “Rule of Three” – not just as vertical layers, but as grouped plantings that form a complete tropical garden bed. In Guanacaste, where plants grow quickly and the climate is intense, the Rule of Three helps prevent landscapes from feeling chaotic or overgrown. Instead of isolated plants scattered across a yard, this approach creates clear focal points that feel lush, cohesive, and purposeful. This is one of the key benefits of landscape design in tropical climates, where growth happens fast and structure matters.

The Rule of Three – More Than Just Height

At its core, the Rule of Three organizes plants into three layers:
  • Top layer – the showstopper
  • Mid-level plants – color, texture, and movement
  • Ground cover – the finishing layer
But the key design element often missed is this: these three layers should be grouped together as one visual unit. Rather than planting palms in one area, heliconias somewhere else, and ground cover scattered throughout, the Rule of Three works best when all three elements are planted together in a defined cluster or bed. This grouping creates a strong focal point that immediately draws the eye and anchors the surrounding space.

Creating a Tropical Focal Point Using the Rule of Three

In gardening in Guanacaste, focal points are essential. The bright sun, lack of green turf, and open landscapes can make yards feel empty or unfinished without clear visual anchors. A tropical garden bed built using the Rule of Three functions like a living sculpture. Each layer supports the others visually and environmentally, showcasing the true benefits of landscape design in tropical climates – balance, resilience, and long-term sustainability. A classic Rule of Three grouping might look like this:
  • One or more palms like a lipstick or cigar palm as the showstopper at the back or center
  • Bird of paradise, heliconias, or gingers planted in front and around the palms
  • Flowering ground cover like lantana or green striped zebra plant filling in the base
Planted together, these three layers create depth, contrast, and flow. From a distance, the eye reads them as one complete design element, not individual plants competing for attention.

Top Layer – The Showstopper That Sets the Scene

Palms are the natural showstoppers in Guanacaste gardens. When used correctly, they act as the backdrop for an entire garden bed. In a Rule of Three grouping, palms are not planted randomly. They are placed deliberately to:
  • Frame entrances or walkways
  • Anchor corners of a property
  • Serve as the visual “back wall” of a tropical bed
The height of the palm establishes the scale of the planting, telling the eye where to look first. Everything else in the grouping is arranged in relation to it.

Mid-Level Plants – Building the Body of the Garden Bed

Mid-level plants are what give the tropical bed its fullness. In landscaping in Guanacaste, this layer should feel dense but controlled. Bird of paradise and heliconias are ideal because they:
  • Add bold color and dramatic leaves
  • Create movement with wind and growth
  • Visually connect tall palms to low ground cover
In a proper grouping, mid-level plants wrap around the base of the palm, softening the transition from trunk to ground. This prevents the “lollipop effect” where palms look bare and disconnected from the landscape. Spacing is key. Plants should be close enough to read as a group, but not so tight that airflow and maintenance become problems.

Ground Cover – The Element That Ties Everything Together

Ground cover is what visually completes the tropical bed. Without it, even the best plant groupings can look unfinished. In Guanacaste gardens, ground cover like lantana and zebra plant provides:
  • A clean, finished edge to the garden bed
  • Soil protection during heavy rains
  • Color at eye level when viewed from patios and walkways
Ground cover should flow continuously beneath the palms and mid-level plants, visually tying the entire grouping together. This creates the lush, layered look people associate with high-end landscape design in Costa Rica.

Why Grouping Benefits Landscaping Design in Guanacaste

Because plants grow so quickly here, ungrouped plantings can become messy fast. The Rule of Three grouping helps control growth visually, even as plants mature – another example of the benefits of landscape design in tropical climates. Grouping also:
  • Reduces the need for constant reshaping
  • Makes maintenance more efficient
  • Creates repeatable design patterns across a property
Instead of dozens of individual plants to manage, you maintain defined tropical beds that evolve naturally over time.

Repeating the Rule of Three Across the Property

One powerful technique in landscape design in Costa Rica is repetition. Once a Rule of Three grouping is established, it can be repeated in different areas using variations of the same plant types. This creates unity across the landscape while still allowing for creativity. Even large properties feel cohesive when the same design logic is repeated from entryways to pool areas to property borders.

Vida Verde Tip – Designing Tropical Garden Beds That Last

When creating a Rule of Three tropical garden bed in Guanacaste, always design for how the grouping will look in two to three years, not just on planting day. A simple guideline we follow at Vida Verde is this:
  • Place the showstopper palm first and give it adequate space to mature
  • Arrange mid-level plants in odd-number groupings around the palm to create a natural flow
  • Use ground cover continuously, not in patches, so the entire bed reads as one cohesive element
If you step back and the grouping looks like a single tropical moment rather than individual plants, you’re on the right track. That visual unity is what separates intentional landscape design in Costa Rica from gardens that quickly feel overgrown or disorganized. Design once, plant with purpose, and let the garden grow into itself.

Designing Tropical Gardens That Feel Intentional, Not Overgrown

The Rule of Three is not about planting more – it is about planting smarter. When palms, mid-level plants, and ground cover are grouped intentionally, they create tropical garden beds that feel balanced, inviting, and effortless. For anyone interested in gardening in Guanacaste, understanding this principle is one of the fastest ways to elevate an outdoor space. A well-designed tropical bed does more than look beautiful – it tells the eye where to rest and allows the garden to thrive naturally in Guanacaste’s unique climate. Top 10 Blooming Flowers, Bushes & Trees for a Thriving Guanacaste Garden

Creating a vibrant garden in Guanacaste is both an art and a science. The tropical dry forest climate brings long months of sun, heat, wind, and minimal rainfall, followed by a lush green season. Successful landscaping in Costa Rica, especially in Guanacaste, depends on choosing plants that can withstand drought while still offering beauty, shade, and color.

Whether you are designing a residential yard, a rental property, or a commercial landscape, these ten flowering plants and trees are proven performers in Costa Rica landscaping and ideal for any Guanacaste garden.

  1. Bougainvillea (Veranera)

Bougainvillea is one of the most iconic flowering plants in Guanacaste. Its vibrant bracts in pink, purple, red, orange, and white bring bold color to walls, fences, pergolas, and hillsides.

This hardy plant thrives in full sun and poor, well-drained soil. Once established, it requires very little water, making it a perfect choice for dry-season landscaping in Costa Rica. Bougainvillea blooms most intensely during the dry months, when other plants slow down, providing consistent color when it is needed most.

  1. Plumeria (Frangipani)

Plumeria, also called frangipani, is a favorite in Costa Rican gardens for both its beauty and fragrance. This small to medium-sized tree produces waxy flowers in shades of white, yellow, pink, and red that smell a lot like the romantic jasmine flower.

Plumeria thrives in Guanacaste’s hot, sunny climate and goes dormant during the driest months, shedding its leaves to conserve water. This natural cycle makes it extremely drought tolerant and low maintenance, ideal for sustainable Costa Rica landscaping.

  1. Yellow Tabebuia (Roble Sabana)

The Yellow Tabebuia, known in Costa Rica as Roble Sabana, is one of the most spectacular flowering trees in the region. During the height of the dry season, when the landscape turns golden and dusty, this tree erupts in brilliant yellow blooms.

Native to tropical dry forests, Roble Sabana is perfectly adapted to Guanacaste conditions. It provides shade, seasonal drama, and ecological value, making it an excellent choice for larger Guanacaste garden designs or public and commercial spaces.

  1. Ixora (Ixora or Jungle Geranium)

Ixora is a compact flowering shrub known for its dense clusters of small star-shaped flowers in red, orange, pink, or yellow. In Costa Rica, it is commonly used for hedges, borders, and accent plantings.

Ixora performs well in full sun to partial shade and benefits from consistent watering during establishment. Once mature, it handles dry periods well, especially with proper mulching. Its tidy growth habit makes it a favorite for structured Costa Rica landscaping designs.

  1. Heliconia (Heliconia or Lobster Claw)

Heliconia, often called platanilla in Costa Rica, brings bold tropical flair to any garden. Its large paddle-shaped leaves and dramatic red, orange, or yellow flower bracts create instant visual impact.

While Heliconia prefers a bit more water than some dry-forest plants, it adapts well to Guanacaste with strategic placement, irrigation, and mulch. It is best used in partially shaded areas or where runoff or irrigation is available, adding a lush contrast to drier landscape elements.

  1. Malinche Tree (Delonix regia)

The Malinche Tree, also known as Flamboyán or Royal Poinciana, is one of the most recognizable flowering trees in Costa Rica. Its massive canopy and fiery red-orange flowers make it a standout feature in any Guanacaste garden.

This tree thrives in hot, dry climates and provides excellent shade once mature. While it needs space to grow, the Malinche Tree is ideal for large properties, parks, or entrance statements in Costa Rica landscaping projects.

  1. Bird of Paradise (Ave del Paraíso)

Bird of Paradise, known locally as Ave del Paraíso, is prized for its striking flowers that resemble a tropical bird in flight. Its sculptural form and upright leaves make it a popular choice for modern and tropical garden designs.

This plant thrives in full sun and handles drought conditions well once established. Bird of Paradise adds structure, height, and year-round interest, making it a versatile option for Guanacaste landscaping.

  1. Lantana (Lantana)

Lantana is one of the toughest and most reliable flowering plants for the tropical dry forest. Known simply as lantana in Costa Rica, this shrub produces clusters of small flowers in vibrant combinations of yellow, orange, red, pink, and purple.

Lantana thrives in intense sun, poor soil, and long dry periods. It is often used for erosion control, borders, and pollinator gardens, as it attracts butterflies and bees. Its resilience makes it a staple in low-maintenance Costa Rica landscaping.

  1. Anthurium (Anturio)

Anthurium, called anturio in Costa Rica, is best known for its glossy leaves and long-lasting, heart-shaped flowers in red, pink, white, and green. While it prefers more humidity, Anthurium can thrive in Guanacaste when planted in shaded, protected areas.

It is ideal for patios, entryways, and shaded garden corners where irrigation is available. Anthurium adds elegance and a softer tropical feel to Guanacaste garden designs.

  1. Allamanda (Golden Trumpet)

Allamanda, often called campana amarilla, is a fast-growing shrub or vine known for its bright yellow trumpet-shaped flowers. It thrives in full sun and blooms generously throughout the year.

Allamanda is heat-tolerant, adaptable, and excellent for fences, trellises, or as a free-form hedge. Its glossy foliage and vibrant flowers make it a standout in Costa Rica landscaping, especially for adding cheerful color to dry-season gardens.

Tips for Successful Landscaping in Guanacaste

When planning your Guanacaste garden, focus on plants that are adapted to long dry seasons, intense sunlight, and occasional strong winds. Group plants with similar water needs together, use organic mulch to retain soil moisture, and plan irrigation carefully to support young plants during establishment.

Combining flowering trees, shrubs, and accent plants ensures year-round interest while maintaining sustainability. Many of these plants bloom during the dry season, providing color and life when the landscape needs it most.

Preparing Your Guanacaste Garden for the Dry Season

The dry season in Guanacaste is a beautiful time of year. Days are long, the skies turn an endless bright blue, and the landscape shifts into its warm tropical dry forest rhythm. But with this change also comes one of the most demanding periods for homes, rentals, and properties across the Gold Coast. High winds, drastic drops in moisture, falling debris, and months without rain can have a significant impact on your outdoor spaces.

At Vida Verde Ecosystem Services, we know that preparing early is the key to keeping your property protected, clean, and renter-ready throughout the dry season. Our dry season prevention and protection services are built to help homeowners and property managers maintain a healthy, clean, and safe environment through every stage of the season. From essential maintenance like gutter cleaning to tree trimming, organic trash pickup, irrigation services, and even wood repair, we cover every detail so your Guanacaste garden and outdoor areas stay in top shape.

Below, we dive into why each service matters, how it protects your home, and why getting ahead of the season pays off for the rest of the year.

Why Dry Season Preparation in Guanacaste Matters

The dry season in Guanacaste typically runs from late November through April. During these months, rainfall is almost nonexistent, winds pick up, and the vegetation begins to dry out. Leaves shed in greater quantities, tree branches weaken, and dust accumulation increases dramatically.

This combination creates two main risks for property owners:

  1. Fire hazards
  2. Structural wear and tear

A well-maintained landscape dramatically reduces these risks while enhancing the functionality and beauty of your outdoor spaces. With our preventative dry season protection service, homeowners avoid expensive repairs later and enjoy peace of mind knowing their property is protected.

  1. Essential Gutter Cleaning

Gutters are one of the most overlooked areas on a property, yet they play a major role in preventing damage during the dry season. As trees shed their leaves and the winds pick up, debris fills gutters faster than most homeowners realize.

Clogged gutters during the dry season lead to several problems such as increased fire risk near the home, water diversion issues when the rains return, pest and insect nesting, and rot or structural damage.

Our team performs a complete gutter inspection and cleaning, making sure every line is clear and debris-free. Removing dry leaves and buildup eliminates a major fire hazard and ensures your drainage system works efficiently when the rainy season returns.

  1. Tree Trimming and Cutting

Trees respond dramatically to the seasonal change. Branches dry out, leaves fall daily, and limbs become more brittle. This makes tree care one of the most important parts of dry-season preparation. Our tree trimming and cutting service removes weakened limbs, reduces heavy leaf fall, and improves overall safety around your home or rental property.

The wind here is no joke! The Papagayo wind blows through Guanacaste from December to March. These winds rush in from the Caribbean, funnel across Lake Nicaragua, and explode out over the Pacific with surprising strength – gusting up to 60 knots. While they feel refreshing on a hot day, they are also responsible for snapping dry branches, toppling weak trees, and sending loose debris flying across properties.

Preparing for these winds with proper trimming is essential. Our trimming service focuses on stability, balance, and hazard reduction. It keeps your Guanacaste garden healthier and prevents falling limbs from damaging roofs, vehicles, or walkways.

  1. Organic Trash Pickup

The dry season leads to a noticeable increase in organic debris. Leaves, branches, seed pods, dried fronds, windblown material, and garden trimmings accumulate quickly. Leaving organic waste on the ground creates an unnecessary fire hazard and attracts pests like snakes and scorpions.

Vida Verde offers scheduled and on-demand organic trash pickup to keep your outdoor areas clean and safe. We remove, sort, and dispose of all organic material in an eco-friendly way, ensuring your landscape stays tidy and reducing the chance of debris buildup that can lead to problems later in the season.

This is especially beneficial for rental properties where a clean outdoor space is part of maintaining a positive guest experience.

  1. Irrigation System Installation and Repairs

One of the biggest challenges with the dry season in Guanacaste is keeping your garden hydrated. Plants, lawns, and new landscaping installations are under constant stress. Without proper irrigation, even established gardens can decline quickly.

Our irrigation services include full system installations, repairs and replacements of broken lines, sprinkler head adjustments, drip system upgrades, water efficiency optimizations, and timer programming for seasonal needs.

Water conservation is especially important during the dry season. A well-designed system uses less water while keeping plants healthier. If your Guanacaste landscaping is struggling, unevenly watered, or experiencing dry patches, now is the perfect time to address it before the harshest months hit.

  1. Wood Repair and Maintenance

Wood structures like pergolas, decks, outdoor furniture, gates, and fascias take a harsher beating in the dry months. Without moisture in the air, wood expands, cracks, and weathers faster. Sun exposure also intensifies during this time.

Vida Verde offers protective wood repair and maintenance services to keep your outdoor structures in good shape, especially before renters or guests arrive. This includes sanding and refinishing, replacing broken or rotted boards, strengthening weakened joints, applying protective coatings, and sealing exposed areas.

Wood care is essential if you want your property looking clean, maintained, and welcoming. For rentals, it also helps avoid complaints or last-minute emergency repairs right before check-ins.

  1. Full Powerwash and Property Cleaning

Our dry season prevention and protection powerwash service brings everything together. Over time, dust, sap, fallen leaves, and tropical debris coat walkways, walls, driveways, patios, and home exteriors. The rainy season adds an ugly and slippery layer of algae and mold. A deep powerwash refreshes the entire property and gives your outdoor spaces a clean, polished look.

This is the finishing touch that makes a major visual difference and helps maintain surfaces long term.

Keep Your Guanacaste Garden Healthy Through Every Season

The dry months may be demanding, but with the right preventative care, your property can stay beautiful, safe, and fully protected. At Vida Verde Ecosystem Services, we take pride in supporting homeowners and property managers in Guanacaste who want reliable, eco-friendly, and thorough landscape maintenance.

Whether you’re preparing your rental home for peak season or simply want your outdoor spaces to thrive, our dry season prevention and protection services ensure every detail is handled with care.

Protect Your Investment with Regular Landscaping and Property Maintenance in Guanacaste’s Coastal Climate

Owning a home or vacation property in Guanacaste – whether near Tamarindo Beach, Playa Flamingo, or any of the surrounding coastal towns – can be a dream come true. The views are breathtaking, the wildlife is abundant, and the lifestyle embodies the pure essence of Pura Vida. But paradise also comes with its challenges, especially when it comes to maintaining your property in Costa Rica’s unique tropical dry forest climate.

The combination of intense sun, heavy rainfall, salty ocean air, and high humidity means that without regular maintenance, even the most beautiful homes can quickly face costly damage. That’s where Vida Verde Ecosystem Services comes in. As a trusted landscaping and maintenance company in Guanacaste, we help homeowners protect their investment year-round through comprehensive care designed specifically for Costa Rica’s unique environment.

The Reality of Owning Property in Guanacaste’s Coastal Zone

Guanacaste’s climate is defined by two distinct seasons – the dry season and the rainy season. From December through April, the landscape is dusty and arid, while May through November brings heavy rains, tropical storms, and lush green growth.

For property owners, this shift means constant upkeep is essential. During the dry months, irrigation systems must be carefully managed to keep your landscaping alive. When the rains arrive, storm preparedness and flood prevention become top priorities.

Many homeowners who don’t live in Costa Rica full-time underestimate how quickly nature can take over. Without regular trimming, cleaning, and preventative maintenance, plants can grow out of control, tree limbs can interfere with electrical wiring or roofs, and gutters can clog with debris, leading to leaks, flooding, and property damage.

Landscaping Maintenance: The First Line of Defense

Your landscape is more than just a beautiful feature – it’s your home’s first line of defense against weather-related damage. Properly maintained landscaping helps control erosion, directs water away from the home, and prevents root overgrowth from damaging foundations and drainage systems.

At Vida Verde, our team provides routine trimming and pruning to ensure your plants remain healthy and don’t interfere with structures, wiring, or rooflines. Overgrown trees and bushes can scratch paint, damage gutters, or even cause roof leaks when left unchecked, especially during strong coastal winds.

We also offer storm preparation trimming, removing heavy branches that could snap during a storm and fall onto patios, furniture, or vehicles. By maintaining your landscaping proactively, you protect both your property and the surrounding ecosystem.

Gutters, Drainage, and Flood Prevention in Guanacaste

During the rainy season, one of the most common issues property owners face in Guanacaste is flooding. With sudden downpours and limited storm drainage in coastal communities, water can accumulate quickly, especially if your gutters or drains are blocked.

Vida Verde provides gutter cleaning and inspection services to ensure water flows freely away from your home. Our maintenance plans also include clearing debris from drains, checking that downspouts are properly connected, and monitoring for soil erosion near the foundation.

We specialize in irrigation systems that double as water management solutions. Our team designs eco-friendly irrigation layouts that distribute water evenly during the dry season and redirect excess rainwater during storms. This balance protects your property year-round, reducing waste, preventing flooding, and maintaining the health of your landscape.

The Aftermath of Storms: Cleaning, Repairs, and Recovery

Even with preparation, tropical storms can leave a mess. Fallen branches, debris, standing water, and damage to outdoor structures are common after heavy rainfall.

Vida Verde’s post-storm clean-up services ensure your property returns to its original condition quickly and safely. We handle everything from clearing fallen trees to checking for hidden damage to irrigation systems to refinishing outdoor furniture and patios.

We also address algae and mold buildup, which thrive in the humid post-storm environment. Green algae can make patios and walkways slippery and unsightly, while mold growth on walls, furniture, and surfaces can damage finishes and create health concerns. Our team uses eco-friendly cleaning solutions to restore and protect these areas, keeping your property safe and looking its best.

The Hidden Impact of Coastal Weather on Outdoor Living Spaces

The coastal breeze that makes life in Tamarindo Beach so refreshing also carries fine salt particles that accelerate wear and tear on outdoor surfaces. Furniture, decking, and patio tiles are especially vulnerable. Combine that with months of humidity, and even stainless steel can begin to corrode.

Regular maintenance and protective sealing are key to extending the life of these features. Vida Verde offers scheduled inspections and treatments for wood, stone, and metal surfaces to help them withstand Costa Rica’s coastal climate.

We also provide seasonal deep cleaning of outdoor kitchens, pool decks, and common areas, removing salt residue, mildew, and organic matter that accumulate faster in tropical conditions.

Mold, Algae, and the Importance of Preventive Care in Costa Rica

The combination of heat and humidity in the tropical dry forest creates a perfect environment for algae, mildew, and mold growth. Even freshly painted walls or new tile can develop a green tinge if left untreated.

Preventive care saves time and money in the long run. Vida Verde uses natural, non-toxic treatments to inhibit growth while keeping your home safe for pets, children, and wildlife. We also recommend regular power washing and surface treatments during and after the rainy season to keep surfaces clean and slip-resistant.

Protecting Your Investment in Paradise

Whether you live in Guanacaste year-round or visit seasonally, your home represents a major investment. Neglecting regular maintenance can quickly lead to costly repairs, from water damage and pest infestations to crumbling stonework and dying gardens.

Create the Garden of Your Dreams in Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Costa Rica is world-renowned for its rich biodiversity, lush landscapes, and vibrant plant life. Living or owning property in the area of Tamarindo, Guanacaste, gives you the opportunity to surround yourself with the incredible beauty of this region’s native and ornamental plants. With the right approach, your outdoor space can transform into a tropical paradise that enhances your home’s value, provides natural shade, and invites birds, butterflies, and pollinators into your garden.

At Vida Verde Ecosystem Services, we specialize in expert garden installation and property care in Costa Rica. As a trusted property maintenance company in Guanacaste, we’ve seen firsthand how the right mix of flora can elevate a property into a stunning, sustainable retreat. Let’s explore some of the most beautiful plants and flowers that thrive in this climate and how they can help you create the garden of your dreams in Guanacaste.

Why Property Care in Costa Rica Matters

Tamarindo is located in one of Costa Rica’s sunniest and driest regions, especially during the dry season from November to April. This makes landscaping decisions especially important. Choosing the right plants ensures your garden not only looks vibrant but also adapts well to the local climate and requires less water and maintenance.

With professional support from a Costa Rica landscaping team like Vida Verde, you can achieve both beauty and sustainability. A well-designed landscape is more than just decoration – it’s an investment in your property’s long-term value and ecological footprint.

Native Plants in Costa Rica’s Tropical Dry Forest

One of the easiest ways to create a beautiful garden in the Tamarindo area is by using native Costa Rican plants. They naturally thrive in Guanacaste’s climate and contribute to local biodiversity.

Guanacaste Tree (Enterolobium cyclocarpum)

As the national tree of Costa Rica, the Guanacaste tree is iconic. Known for its massive canopy, it provides excellent shade, making it perfect for larger properties. Planting one not only adds beauty but also ties your garden to the cultural heritage of the country.

Agave (Agave americana)

Agaves are striking succulents that thrive in Guanacaste’s dry climate. Their architectural form makes them excellent accent plants in garden beds or along pathways. They require little maintenance and bring a modern, sculptural look to the landscape.

Heliconia (Heliconia rostrata)

Also known as the “lobster claw,” heliconias add a striking visual impact with their unusual shapes and vibrant red and yellow bracts. They attract hummingbirds and add depth to tropical gardens.

Lantana (Lantana camara)

This colorful flowering shrub is both drought-resistant and pollinator-friendly. Its clusters of red, orange, pink, or yellow flowers bloom throughout the year, attracting butterflies and bees. Lantana thrives in Guanacaste’s conditions and is ideal for borders or low hedges.

Ornamental and Exotic Plants for a Tropical Feel

While native plants provide the foundation, incorporating exotic ornamentals adds variety and flair.

Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae): With its vivid orange and blue blooms resembling a bird in flight, the bird of paradise is a stunning addition to any tropical garden. It thrives in full sun, making it ideal for open spaces in Tamarindo and surrounding areas.

Orchids (Orchidaceae): Costa Rica is home to over 1,400 species of orchids, and incorporating them into your landscaping design creates elegance and sophistication. Orchids can be grown on trees, in pots, or in shaded garden areas.

Bromeliads (Bromeliaceae): Bromeliads are colorful and hardy, with unique rosette-shaped leaves that collect water. They are ideal for creating a lush underlayer in your garden while adding splashes of red, yellow, and purple.

Frangipani (Plumeria rubra): Famous for its fragrant white, pink, and yellow flowers, frangipani trees bring tropical charm and a glorious scent to your property. They are drought-tolerant, making them perfect for Guanacaste’s dry season.

Functional Landscaping: Beauty with Purpose

Great gardens in Costa Rica are not only visually pleasing but also practical.

Shade and Cooling: Planting large native trees like Guanacaste or Almond trees reduces the heat around your home, lowering energy costs and making outdoor spaces more enjoyable.

Privacy and Boundaries: Dense hedges of flowering shrubs like Heliconia or bird of paradise create natural privacy screens, allowing you to enjoy your garden without sacrificing beauty.

Pollinator-Friendly Gardens: Heliconias, lantana, and orchids attract hummingbirds and butterflies, bringing your garden to life while supporting local ecosystems.

Garden Design Ideas for Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Creating a dream garden involves more than simply planting a few flowers. Thoughtful design ensures harmony, balance, and sustainability.

  • Tropical Oasis: Combine palms, orchids, and bromeliads with winding stone pathways.
  • Low-Maintenance Elegance: Use lantana, crotons, and drought-resistant succulents for vibrant color with less upkeep.
  • Native and Natural: Plant Guanacaste trees for shade, heliconias for height, agaves for structure, and lantana for year-round color.
  • Modern Luxury: Blend minimalist design with lush green lawns, neatly trimmed hedges, and dramatic lighting to highlight feature plants.
  • Mediterranean Vibe: Incorporate terracotta pots, lavender, rosemary, and bougainvillea alongside stone or tiled accents for a timeless and elegant style that pairs beautifully with Guanacaste’s sunny climate.

Answering Your Questions About Landscaping and Property Maintenance in Guanacaste, Costa Rica

If you own a home or vacation property in Tamarindo or anywhere in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, you know the climate can be both a blessing and a challenge. The region’s mix of intense sun, long dry seasons, and heavy rains makes proper landscaping and outdoor maintenance essential year-round. Whether you’re full-time in Costa Rica or managing a second home from abroad, having a reliable team to care for your outdoor space and essential property features is key to preserving both beauty and value.

At Vida Verde Ecosystem Services, we’re proud to offer full-service landscaping and property maintenance in Guanacaste, and we often get asked the same key questions. In this guide, we’ve compiled the answers to the most common concerns, so that whether you’re planting your first garden, installing an irrigation system, or wondering how often to clean your air conditioner, you’ll know exactly what to expect.

What landscaping services does Vida Verde offer in Guanacaste? We offer complete, eco-conscious landscaping services to residents and property owners throughout Tamarindo, Playa Grande, Hacienda Pinilla, Playa Langosta, and the surrounding areas. Our services include landscape design, native and drought-tolerant plant installations, irrigation system planning and installation, lawn care and pruning, hardscaping (such as stone pathways and borders), garden bed creation, yard clearing, and ongoing garden maintenance. Our approach focuses on sustainability and long-term health of the landscape, using low-water plants and eco-friendly methods to reduce environmental impact.

Do you use native plants in your landscape designs in the Tamarindo area? Yes, absolutely. Using native and climate-adapted plants is at the core of what we do. These species not only thrive in the tropical dry forest climate of Guanacaste, but also support local biodiversity and reduce the need for excessive watering or chemical inputs. Popular native plants we use include bougainvillea, hibiscus, crotons, heliconia, and flowering trees like the Malinche or Corteza Amarilla. Native plants help create lush, vibrant gardens that are easier and more affordable to maintain in the long run.

Can you help maintain my Guanacaste vacation home while I’m away? Yes—we specialize in vacation home and rental property maintenance for absentee homeowners. Whether you’re away for the season or renting your property to guests, we’ll ensure it stays in excellent condition. Our team performs regular visits for garden maintenance, checks on irrigation systems, cleans outdoor areas like patios and walkways, and even provides functional checks on air conditioning units and wood structures. We’ll help keep your property clean, healthy, and guest-ready—so you never have to worry from afar.

How often should I water my garden during the rainy season in Guanacaste? Surprisingly, watering can still be necessary during the green season (May to November), depending on the drainage and layout of your garden. If your soil drains quickly or your plants are in raised beds or containers, supplemental watering may still be needed a few times a week. Our team can assess your space and develop a custom irrigation plan that supports plant health while avoiding wasteful overwatering.

Do I need an irrigation system for my garden in Guanacaste, Costa Rica? If you want a thriving garden year-round, an irrigation system is strongly recommended. The dry season in Guanacaste lasts several months, and manual watering is rarely sustainable for larger spaces. We install manual and automatic irrigation systems designed for your specific property. Systems can be configured to draw from clean water or greywater sources, and we use efficient methods like drip irrigation to conserve resources while ensuring your plants stay hydrated.

How do I get a free estimate for landscaping services in Guanacaste, Costa Rica? Getting started is simple. Send us a WhatsApp or email with your location, a few photos of your space, and a brief description of what you’d like done—whether it’s full landscaping, regular yard maintenance, or just a cleanup and tune-up. We’ll schedule a site visit if necessary, and provide you with a free, personalized estimate.

What maintenance services does Vida Verde offer beyond landscaping? Our clients appreciate that we go beyond standard landscaping to offer a full suite of outdoor and property maintenance services that are essential in a tropical climate.

  • Air Conditioner Cleaning: Salt air and dust can quickly damage AC units in coastal areas like Tamarindo. We recommend professional cleaning every 3–4 months to prevent mold buildup, improve airflow, and lower energy costs. We clean coils, filters, and drainage components to keep your indoor air safe and your unit running efficiently.
  • Deck Revarnishing and Wood Maintenance: Wood decks, railings, and furniture take a beating in Costa Rica’s sun and humidity. We offer deck cleaning, sanding, and revarnishing using marine-grade sealants that protect your wood from weather damage and extend its life.
  • Lot Clearing and Property Cleanup: Whether you’re preparing to sell or just need overgrowth removed, we handle everything from tree trimming and brush removal to full property cleanups using sustainable practices that minimize environmental disruption.

Rainy Season Readiness: Landscaping Tips for Guanacaste’s Wet Months

The rainy season in coastal Guanacaste, Costa Rica, transforms the dry, sunbaked landscape into a lush, green paradise. But this dramatic seasonal shift also brings challenges for property owners and gardeners alike. Whether you manage a private home or a commercial property, proper planning and maintenance are key to ensuring your green spaces thrive during the rains.

At Vida Verde Ecosystem Services, we specialize in Costa Rica landscaping that stands up to the country’s unique climate. Here’s how to prepare your landscape for the rainy season and how to maintain it once the rains begin.

Preparing Your Costa Rica Landscape for the Rainy Season

The rainy season in Guanacaste typically runs from May to November, with the most intense rains falling between September and October. Preparation can begin before the first rains arrive.

  1. Drainage Is Everything

One of the most important rainy season tasks is ensuring proper drainage. Poor drainage can lead to flooding, erosion, root rot, and damage to walkways and foundations.

Key drainage techniques used in Costa Rica landscaping include:

  • French drains: Trenches filled with gravel and perforated pipes to redirect water away from buildings and plant beds.
  • Dry creek beds: Attractive and functional, these mimic natural waterways and channel excess water during heavy downpours.
  • Swales and berms: Shallow, vegetated channels (swales) and raised areas (berms) slow and redirect water flow, helping absorb runoff into the soil.
  • Permeable surfaces: Using materials like gravel, permeable pavers, or sand-set stone for patios and walkways allows water to seep into the ground rather than pooling.

A site inspection by a professional landscaping team, like Vida Verde, can identify drainage risks before they become costly issues.

  1. Irrigation System Adjustments

Yes, even during the rainy season, irrigation plays a role, especially in the early weeks when rainfall is still sporadic or in protected areas that receive less moisture.

It’s a common misconception that rain alone is enough to hydrate your plants all season long. But if your landscape has an efficient drainage system, rainwater may run off quickly before your plants can absorb it. That’s why it’s still important to monitor moisture levels and water plants occasionally.

TIP: To determine if your plants need watering, use the finger test: push your finger a few inches into the soil near your plants. If the soil feels damp, you can skip watering. If it’s dry or crumbly, it’s time to give your plants a drink.

Before the rains begin:

  • Inspect your irrigation system for leaks, clogs, or uneven coverage.
  • Install or calibrate rain sensors so the system shuts off automatically while it’s raining.
  • Switch to seasonal watering schedules that adjust flow rates and duration based on rainfall patterns.

Smart irrigation controllers, now commonly used in gardening in Costa Rica, can help manage water use effectively, conserving water while keeping plants healthy.

  1. Soil Conditioning and Mulching

Healthy soil absorbs water better. Consider:

  • Aerating compacted soil to allow water and nutrients to reach plant roots.
  • Adding compost or organic matter to improve soil structure and increase absorption.
  • Applying mulch around trees, shrubs, and garden beds to reduce erosion, suppress weeds, and retain soil moisture.

Mulch also helps prevent the hard crust that can form when intense rains compact the soil.

Landscape Maintenance During the Rainy Season

Once the rains begin, your landscape will change quickly, and so should your maintenance strategy.

  1. Monitor for Erosion and Washouts

Heavy rains can lead to soil erosion, especially on slopes or poorly planted areas. After a major rain, walk your property and look for:

  • Washed-out mulch or gravel
  • Exposed roots
  • Sediment buildup in drains or low-lying areas

Solutions may include installing erosion-control fabrics, planting deep-rooted ground cover, or adding retaining features like stone borders or living fences.

  1. Pruning and Plant Management

Rain accelerates growth, but not always in a good way. Fast-growing vines, hedges, and grass can quickly get out of control during the rainy season.

  • Prune trees and shrubs regularly to prevent branches from breaking under water weight.
  • Clear fallen leaves and debris to avoid fungal growth and blockages in drains.
  • Weed weekly – the warm, moist soil is ideal for unwanted plant growth.

For commercial properties, clean and tidy landscaping also helps maintain curb appeal during the lush but messy wet season.

  1. Lawn and Grass Care

Grass grows rapidly in the rainy season. While you may have to trim more often, don’t cut too short. Taller grass provides better shade to roots and reduces runoff. Choose turf varieties suited to gardening in Costa Rica, such as:

  • Zoysia grass – tolerant of both sun and shade, and resists erosion.
  • Bahia grass – drought- and disease-resistant, with a deep root system ideal for sloped or sandy areas.

Avoid mowing wet grass when possible to prevent soil compaction and uneven cuts.

Plants That Thrive in Coastal Guanacaste’s Wet Season

Costa Rica landscaping benefits from a tropical climate with rich biodiversity. During the rainy season, certain plants truly come alive. These native and well-adapted species are ideal for private gardens and commercial properties alike:

Flowering Plants:

  • Heliconias – Colorful and dramatic, they love rain and thrive in partial shade.
  • Gingers – Ornamental and fragrant, with vibrant red or pink blooms.
  • Ixora – Bright clusters of flowers and low-maintenance foliage.

Shrubs and Ground Cover:

  • Lantana – Hardy, fast-growing, and a magnet for butterflies.
  • Wedelia – A ground cover that handles rain and suppresses weeds.
  • Crotons – Add vibrant color with their variegated leaves.

Trees:

  • Guachipelín (Diphysa americana) – Native to Guanacaste, with yellow flowers and sturdy roots.
  • Madero negro (Gliricidia sepium) – Offers quick shade and supports biodiversity.
  • Corteza Amarilla (Tabebuia ochracea) – A seasonal favorite with stunning yellow blooms at the end of dry season and into the rains.
