“We’re re-transplanting to create privacy between the house next door,” Kathryn explains, highlighting the thoughtful approach to both design and functionality.

The project then moved into heavy construction, with a backhoe on-site for nearly two weeks.

“The backhoe is there for 12 days – building out the pads correctly, creating terraces, preparing for the rainy season,” she says.

Terracing is a key element of the redesign, allowing the property to manage water flow effectively while creating distinct, usable spaces. Drainage systems are being installed at the base of each slope to further protect the land during heavy rains.

From there, the project expands into water infrastructure:

“We’re putting in a 5000-liter water tank with all the hydraulic system and the pressurization… and connecting the irrigation system into three different zones.”

This level of detail ensures that every part of the property receives the right amount of water – no more, no less.

But the transformation doesn’t stop at functionality.

The backyard is being reimagined as a serene orchard-style garden, complete with Mesino lime trees, bananas, papayas, coconut palms, and avocado trees.

There is also a vegetable and herb garden in the works, with an emphasis on water consciousness.

“For example, we didn’t plant pineapple, which needs to be watered three times a day!”

They also plan to plant lemongrass and lavender to repel mosquitoes.

“It’s like a relaxing, but functional, garden in the backyard,” Kathryn shares.

Meanwhile, the front yard will feature fresh soil, new grass, and nearly all new plants – a complete refresh designed to enhance curb appeal and usability.

Yornan Leiber Durán Hernández – known to most as Pito – brings a story of resilience, humility, and hard-earned success.

Originally from Guápiles, Costa Rica, Pito is one of ten siblings and a farmer by trade. He grew up wearing his work boots to school and carrying his books in a rice bag. Hard work was not a choice – it was a way of life.
